Invited talk: Jon Whittle
Software Modeling and Reuse: the Good, the
Bad and the Ugly
How is model-driven engineering really used
in industry? And, in practice, what is the relationship between MDE and other
paradigms such as software product lines?
This talk will discuss results from a
twelve month empirical study assessing how MDE is used in industry. This is the
first large scale study of its kind. Data was collected using a three pronged
approach: (1) a widely disseminated questionnaire which received over 400
responses; (2) in-depth interviews with around 30 MDE practitioners; (3)
on-site observational studies with industry.
The study sheds light on the way that
companies really are using MDE (or not), on how software reuse complements MDE,
and on how we should be training and educating people in MDE.
Bio:
Jon Whittle is a full Professor, Chair of
Software Engineering and Royal Society Wolfson Merit Scholar at Lancaster
University. He has parallel research interests in model-driven engineering and
social computing. In particular, his recent interests are in how new social
media and social networking can influence or contribute to MDE. Jon has been
intimately involved with the MDE community for over ten years, having served as
Chair of the Steering Committee of MODELS from 2006-2008 and serving as PC
Chair in 2011. He also sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Software
and System Modeling. Jon is currently principal or co-investigator on a number
of interdisciplinary research projects, with a total net worth of around £5M.
